Gagat – an ornamental stone known since Neolith: on Stone Age sites the roundish slices of gagat processed by silicon tools are found.
It is black fossil coal with bright resinous shine of a velvet shade. Hardness 2,5-4. It is also called as black amber.
These spheres are made from gagat found in Russian Siberia near Cheremkhovo railway station (about 150 km NW from Irkutsk city).
Formation is Early Jurassic (about 200 m.y.)
The gagat was used in medicine, alchemy and for the most part in mourning jewelry.
It is well polished and is easily processed. Products from gagate are widely used in an astrology.
